Nungwi, Zanzibar
Our resort in the village of Nungwi is nestled in a traditional fishing village. Every afternoon the village men depart on their locally crafted Dhows for a night of fishing. It's an amazing site to see as they prepare their boats and fishing nets for their night of fishing. The design of the sail and the subtle colours of the weathered wood dot the horizon as the flotilla leaves around 4:30 pm every day for their harvest of the sea. They return in the morning with their 'catch of the day'. Large tuna, swordfish and red snapper.
The women have a very traditional role and rarely work outside of the home. i don't think I have seen a women driving or working in any capacity other than the service industry. Here in Nungwi, the subtle colour of the fishing boats contrasts with the highly decorated head scarves worn by the village women. The women can be seen heading out to the sandbars at low tide gathering shell fish and squid. You can watch them tenderize the squid by beating them with a wooden stick on the beach. Usually there a few children in tow. Not easy to do with the hot sun and long clothing covering al of your body.
We have the resort almost to our selves this week. The season is slow at the moment but should pick up this month.
We have only a few days here and will enjoy the hospitality at this lovely village until we go over to the mainland.
